Tamil Nadu's economy grew at 11.19% in 2024–25 — its first double‑digit year in fourteen years. This atlas tracks the data behind that number, the districts that drove it, and the people who hold office in them.
Four districts, one economy

The choices, sources, and caveats behind every number on this site.
Why district-level
State-level aggregates dominate India's development discourse, but the action increasingly sits below the state. Investment decisions, governance quality, and human development outcomes all vary sharply within a state — sometimes more than they vary between states. This atlas works at the district level for that reason.
Why Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu's recent economic trajectory is genuinely interesting. The state recorded 11.19% real GSDP growth in 2024–25 — its first double-digit year in fourteen years — and has averaged just over 9% annual real growth across the five years from 2021–22 to 2025–26. That arc, paired with the state's long-standing investment in human development, makes it a useful case study in state-led growth.
Why these four districts first
We start with what we call Class A: Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu. Together these form the Chennai Metropolitan Region — a contiguous, economically integrated belt that produces a disproportionate share of state output. Beginning here means the atlas can be useful before it's exhaustive. Further classes (B: Coimbatore corridor; C: tier-2 cities; D: agricultural and emerging) will follow.
The Chengalpattu carve-out problem
On 29 November 2019, Chengalpattu district was carved out of Kancheepuram. This means pre-2020 data for Chengalpattu does not exist as a separate series — it sits bundled inside Kancheepuram's historical figures. Where the original data uses pre-2020 boundaries, this site labels the series accordingly. Where post-2020 data is shown, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu appear as separate units. The two cannot be cleanly compared across the boundary change without taluk-level reconstruction.
Long-format data
The underlying data schema is in long format: one row per district per year per indicator. This handles the reality that different indicators have different temporal coverage — GDDP is annual, NFHS once every five years, Census once a decade. Every indicator row carries a source_id linking to the bibliography, a vintage note, and an is_estimate flag.
What "estimate" means here
An entry flagged is_estimate = TRUE means the value is either modelled (e.g., satellite-derived PM2.5 where no ground station exists), provisional (P-marked GDDP figures), or interpolated. Wherever possible the atlas uses measured values, and the flag is explicit so readers can filter accordingly.
Current vs constant prices
GDDP figures currently shown are in current (nominal) prices, because that is what the Department of Economics & Statistics has published most recently at district level. Subtracting an implied deflator of roughly 4–6% per year gives an approximate real growth rate. A constant-price series will be added to this atlas as the source data becomes available, and noted in the changelog.
Governance data — quality note
Names of currently-serving officeholders are compiled from district administration portals and gazette notifications. Historical rosters are being reconstructed from gazette archives. Until cross-verified against original sources, names appearing in the prototype are placeholders marked [To be filled]. The structure of the roster is, however, stable.
What is not yet here
This is version 0.1. Notably absent: constant-price GDDP, sectoral GDDP shares, district-level population estimates beyond 2011, female labour force participation, district-level fiscal data, environmental indicators, and a full historical governance roster. Each will be added with a dated changelog entry as data is sourced and verified.
Reproducibility
The full underlying data sits in a single spreadsheet, structured according to the schema described here. Every figure on this site reads from that spreadsheet. The intention is to make the workbook downloadable alongside the atlas, so any reader can audit, fork, or extend the underlying data.

What this is
The Tamil Nadu Growth Project is an independent research atlas tracking the state's recent economic trajectory at the district level. It compiles public-sector data — from MoSPI, the TN Department of Economics & Statistics, the Census, NFHS, and gazette notifications — into a single, sourced, downloadable resource. Every chart on this site reads from a public spreadsheet; every figure is traceable to its origin.

Why this format
Three reasons. First, district-level data exists but is scattered across publications, agencies, and vintages — bringing it together is itself a contribution. Second, growth narratives at the state level tend to obscure the within-state variation that actually shapes policy effectiveness; a district atlas restores that texture. Third, this is the kind of resource the author would have wanted while studying Indian development economics — open, sourced, and usable.
Editorial position
This project takes Tamil Nadu's recent growth seriously as an empirical phenomenon, while remaining open to the questions it raises — including who benefits, what the costs are, and whether the trajectory is durable. The atlas does not endorse any government's framing of its own record. It is a working compilation of public data, intended to make those questions easier to ask with evidence.
